Cypress

Bald cypress is a deciduous wetland species that grows along rivers, streams, and creeks as well as in swamps with slow moving water. It can live up to 600 years and grow up to 170 feet high. Old-growth heartwood is especially desired in the timber industry for it durability and resistance to rot.

Historically, bald cypress was an important tree in the economy of the Southeast. Despite its swampy habitat, early settlers and then loggers harvested bald cypress. The wood is generally resistant to decay, easy to work with relatively few hand tools, and makes beautiful cabinets and furniture.

Bald cypress swamps extend from eastern Texas into the Southern Coastal Plain of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina. They also occur in Arkansas, Western Tennessee, Southeastern Missouri and as far north as Southern Illniois and to Southern New Jersey along the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
